Chapter Nine

Charlie

I opened my eyes, then squeezed them tight shut. Jeez, it’s bright. I peered at the clock on the nightstand. It was seven-thirty, which meant the sun had already been up for maybe an hour and a half. Shit, I gotta get up. Then I remembered. It was Sunday, Tommy was next door at Delia’s—and there was a man in my bed.

A man making absolutely no sound.

I rolled over, and my heart sank to see the empty space.

He didn’t stay after all. Well fuck.

I sagged onto my back, searching my not-quite-awake brain for some memory of the previous night. I couldn’t forget that kiss, and I had a vague recollection of his hand on my cock. He’d come home with me, that much I remembered. But after that?

Yeah, not so much.

I caught a whiff of something that made my mouth water and my senses zing into life. Is that… bacon? Somewhere in the deep recesses of my booze-addled brain, it occurred to me that maybe Tommy had come home and was trying to cook. Christ, no. I wanted to see Daniel again, but not because my house was burning down.

Delia would swear I’d put Tommy up to it.

I threw back the sheets, grabbed my shorts from where Daniel had dropped them the night before—hey, I remembered that much—stepped into them, then went to the kitchen.

Daniel stood in front of the stove, humming to himself, and I took a moment to admire him in his white shorts, his feet bare on the beige marble tiles. He looks as big as a house. Christ, my head was only just past his shoulder.

He also looked sexy as fuck.

Butter was melting in the frying pan, and a bowl filled with beaten egg sat on the countertop next to him. The coffee pot was full.

I sauntered over. “Hey, if this is what I wake up to when you stay over…”

He jumped and spun around. “You scared the bejesus out of me.” Then he went back to his frying pan.

I kissed his bare shoulder, unable to resist the impulse. “Good morning.” I smiled. “You didn’t leave.” That part alone was sufficient to put a shine on my day.

Daniel turned to face me, frowning. “Did you want me to?”

“No,” I fired back at him. “But… can I ask… did we… do anything last night?” I was still kinda fuzzy on the details.

“We sure did.”

“Oh.” My stomach clenched. Aw crap. I don’t remember any of it.

His eyes were bright. “I undressed you…”

I snorted. “Yeah, I can just about recall that part. But after that?”

“Then I put you to bed, and you were asleep in less than two minutes.” He chuckled and returned his attention to the frying pan. “Bacon’s warming in the oven, and the eggs won’t be long. The hash browns are done too. They’re with the bacon.” He coughed. “Your left burner is a little sketchy. Might wanna consider having it checked. Fire hazard, you know.”

“Fine. I’ll do that. Can we get back to the hash browns? Because we don’t have any hash browns.
